Manchester United 4 Portsmouth 1

Manchester United hammered Portsmouth 4-1 at Fratton Park yesterday in Avram Grant's first game in charge of the south coast side. Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, before Ryan Giggs added a fourth goal late on.

It's almost 18 months since Grant last faced Sir Alex Ferguson in the Champions League final in Moscow, but yesterday the Israeli coach was in charge of a team at the bottom of the Premier League while United were looking to keep in touch with Chelsea at the top.

Portsmouth started well and went close to breaking the deadlock through Aruna Dindane. Despite the fact that Ferguson was consigned to the stand following his two match touchline ban his team went about their business in the usual fashion and went ahead on 25 minutes.

Michael Brown fouled Rooney in the box and the England striker stepped up to covert the penalty himself. However, Portsmouth were back on level terms just five minutes later when referee Mike Dean awarded a controversial penalty which Kevin-Prince Boateng smashed home.

However, Pompey's fightback was short lived. Rooney was once again on hand to give United minutes after the break when he controlled a Giggs through ball before perfectly placing his finish past Asmir Begovic. The former Everton striker bagged his third, again from the penalty spot, after Giggs had been fouled in the box by Frederic Piquionne.

Giggs made sure of the win with a trademark free-kick three minutes from the end to consign Portsmouth to the foot of the Premier League table.
