Manchester United 2 Liverpool 1

Manchester United leapfrogged Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford this afternoon.

The away side took the lead on five minutes when Steven Gerrard dispossessed Michael Carrick and fed the ball to Dirk Kuyt. The Dutch forward delivered a cross which the unmarked Fernando Torres headed past Edwin Van der Sar.

However, United got back on level terms through controversial circumstances when Howard Webb awarded the home side a penalty. Javier Mascherano began fouling Antonio Valencia outside the box and the infringement continued into the penalty area.

Pepe Reina saved Wayne Rooney’s spot-kick but the England striker scored from the rebound. Park Ji-sung put United ahead on 60 minutes when he evaded Glen Johnson to power home a Darren Fletcher cross past Reina.

The result edges Sir Alex Ferguson’s team ever closer to a third successive Premier League title.
