Manchester City sign Robinho for £32.5m
Manchester City have signed Brazilian star Robinho for a British-record fee of £32.5m. The club was bought yesterday by a group of Arab billionaires and they instantly flexed their financial muscle to sign the want away striker from Real Madrid.
Robinho had looked set to join Chelsea and in the past it was Roman Abramovich who was in a position to outbid the opposition, illustrated in the signing of Manchester United targets Michael Essien and Arjen Robben. But City's capture of Robinho makes it clear that there is a new financial power in the Premier League.
Chelsea's failure to land Robinho will come as a major disappointment to new Blues' boss Luiz Felipe Scolari who had underlined his desire to bring the playmaker to Stamford Bridge. With City rumoured to have made a £40m offer for Valencia's David Villa and the Robinho transfer in the bag, Chelsea will be waking up to the reality that they are no longer the richest club in the land.
