Manchester City 1 Chelsea 0

Manchester City beat Chelsea 1-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium yesterday afternoon thanks to a second-half goal from Carlos Tevez.

The game was billed as a clash of the Premier League’s biggest spenders but turned out to be a cagey affair in which City’s main priority was keeping a clean sheet.

Chelsea struggled to break down City’s central midfield which contained three holding players including the indefatigable Nigel de Jong.

The closest the visitors came to scoring was Pablo Zabaleta’s misplaced defensive header from a corner which rebounded off the post and into the arms of City keeper Joe Hart.

While the Citizens looked solid defensively they struggled going forward although David Silva and Carlos Tevez linked up well at times hinting at what could be a fruitful partnership in the future.

The Spanish attacker’s decoy run was crucial to the game’s decisive goal. With John Terry marking Silva, Tevez had the space to fire a low shot through Ashley Cole’s legs and past Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal.

Tevez has now scored 25 goals in his last 29 Premier League appearances and Mancini was quick to praise the Argentina striker afterwards. ‘Carlos is a fantastic player not just because he scored the goal but because he fights for the ball every time. Even against bigger players.’
