Malawi beat Algeria 3-0 at Africa Cup of Nations

Malawi pulled off a shock 3-0 win against England's World Cup group opponents Algeria in their Africa Cup of Nations Group A match in Angola this afternoon.

Striker Russel Mwafulirwa gave the underdogs the lead on 17 minutes when he took advantage of some comedy defending by Algeria before the wonderfully named Elvis Kafoteka grabbed a second just before half time when he headed home .

All chances of an Algeria comeback ended when their keeper Chaouchi gifted Davi Banda Malawi's third goal early into the second. The result leaves the minnows top of Group A after Angola and Mali played out a pulsating 4-4 draw last night.

Despite having nine European based players in their first team Algeria struggled to come to terms with the heat and humidity and were out of the game by the break. If the football rumour mill is to be believed The Desert Foxes are saving themselves for the World Cup.
