Making history?

The football season is shuddering to a thrilling climax, with really big games coming thick and fast just about every other day. We’ve had crucial league clashes, massive Champions League nights and amusing upsets in the FA Cup. Alongside said that we’ve had the rather lame dribble that is the Europa League.

Last night we had the first legs of the semi finals, with Liverpool losing 1-0 away at Atletico Madrid thanks to a goal from Diego Forlan, and Fulham playing out a rather depressing 0-0 draw at Hamburg that nonetheless gives them a decent chance of progressing to their first ever European final. Both sides need to be aware of that sneaky away goal, however.

‘We've been in the situation before and we've found we can win, so hopefully it will be the same again,’ said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez. ‘It will be difficult because 1-0 is always a dangerous score, but we are still confident.’

‘We've done it in the past and we have to approach the game with this confidence and it would then be easier for us to play better and to score more goals. We had two or three chances and we missed the target, which was a pity. These kind of games you have to take your chances.

‘But the second leg (on 29 April) is at Anfield and I am confident. Anfield is massive and with the fans behind us we can beat anyone.’
