When the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony takes place in the Olympic stadium on July 27, the games will already be two days old. Events get underway on July 25 with women's football at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Men's football begins on July 26.

One of the most highly-anticipated events of the entire competition, the men's 100m final takes place on Sunday, August 5, when all eyes expect to follow Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt over the line in first place.

Swimming will be a key event of the first week. The men's 400m freestyle and 400m individual medley finals will take place at the Aquatics centre on July 28, as will the women's 400m individual medley and 4 x 100m freestyle relay finals. The men's road cycling race will take place on the same day, with the winner crowned at the victory ceremony at The Mall.

Medals in shooting, diving, weightlifting, judo and fencing will all be decided before the first week is over.

On Saturday, August 4 the women's 100m final will take centre stage, while the women's triathlon, women's singles tennis the heptathlon and all remaining rowing and swimming competitions will be decided. On August 5th, the women's marathon and 400m final and the men's singles tennis gold medal match make for a mouthwatering day's competition alongside the men's 100m final.

As the Games enters the final week, canoeing, track cycling, boxing, gymnastics, equestrian events and hockey all feature heavily. The men's triple jump final takes place of August 9, as does the women's football final at Wembley.

A packed day at the Olympic Stadium on August 11 decides gold medals in the men's 5000m, the men's 4 x 100m relay, the men's javelin, the women's 4 x 400m relay and the women's high jump. Football fans will cast an eye towards Wembley Stadium and the men's football final.
