Liverpool want to get their Phil

Transfer titillation is almost as good as football itself. Blackburn Rovers’ prize asset, defender Phil Jones, 19, has declared his desire to play for a bigger club, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United sharpening their talons and preparing to swoop.

The defensive powerhouse only signed a new deal in January, and is unlikely to submit a formal transfer request. But Blackburn manager Steve Kean is aware of the youngster’s potential and and may be tempted to cash in accordingly if a mouth-watering bid in excess of £17 million comes his way.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wants new players fast, and is bidding hard for young British born and Premier League experienced players. At 19 Jones fits that bill perfectly – but while Arsenal and Manchester United are prepared to wait a year before making a move for Jones, they may be forced to enter the race for is signature should Liverpool force the issue.

Lots of ifs and buts and plenty of money to be splashed out. That’s how we like our transfers.
