Liverpool thumped Newcastle 5-1 at St James' Park this afternoon to remain top of the Premier League. Only a number of outstanding saves from Shay Given in the Newcastle goal stopped a rampant Reds side winning by an even greater margin.
Steven Gerrard opened the scoring in the 31st minute before Sami Hypia and a Ryan Babel double increased Liverpool's lead. Xavi Alonso put the icing on the cake with a 76th minute penalty.
Rafa Benitez rested Albert Rieira, Robbie Keane and Alonso but Newcastle were unable to deal with the power, pace and organisation of the league leaders. The result sees Liverpool cement their place at the top of the table and will have their fans dreaming of silverware.
