Liverpool thrashed Spanish giants Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield last night to book their place in the quarter-final of the Champions League. The Reds went into the game with a 1-0 lead from the first leg two weeks ago but still wary of the nine time European champions.
Despite much grumbling about Liverpool's negativity this season by fans and opponents alike, the Reds produced a master-class in attacking football with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard in barnstorming form.
The Spaniard opened the scoring on 16 minutes after playing a neat one two with Dirk Kuyt before smashing the ball past Iker Casillas in the Real goal. Liverpool were awarded a dubious penalty midway through the first-half which Gerrard slotted home to make it 2-0.
Real looked to strike back early in the second half, but it was Gerrard who again made the difference scoring one of his trademark European wonder goals to put the result beyond doubt. Substitute Andrea Dossena scored a fourth goal near the end to put the icing on another memorable night in the Champions League for Rafa Benitez and his players.
