Liverpool remain top of the Premiership
Liverpool consolidated their position at the top of the Premiership with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at Anfield last night. But Rafa Benitez's side needed a Steven Gerrard penalty to secure the three points.
Portsmouth looked well organised at the back in Tony Adams' first game in charge against an understrength and underwhelming Liverpool. It looked as if the south coast side would hang on for a famous point before midfielder Bouba Diop had a moment of madness to gift Liverpool the three points.
The Senegal midfielder needlessly handled Fabio Aurelio's corner and Gerrard made no mistake from the penalty spot. Liverpool are now winning games without playing well and are currently sitting pretty at the top of the table on 26 points. This could well be their year.
