Liverpool left sweating over Torres' fitness

Liverpool are sweating over the fitness of Spain striker Fernando Torres who will undergo a scan on the groin injury he picked up at the end of the World Cup final on Sunday.

The striker, who is rumoured to be a summer transfer target for Chelsea, will undergo an examination on the injury to his left adductor and there are fears that he could be out of action for two months.

Torres missed large parts of last season with a persistent hernia problem and also had two separate knee operations during a frustrating season. The 26-year-old returned for the World Cup but was well below his best throughout.

Chelsea and Manchester City have both been linked with Torres during the summer but it remains to be seen if his current injury problems will see the Premier League’s big spenders look elsewhere.

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is desperate to keep Torres at Anfield and is expected to travel to Spain later this week in an attempt to convince the striker that his future lies with the Reds. Watch this space.
