Liverpool go top with 3-0 win over West Ham
Liverpool moved top of the Premier League on goal difference following a 3-0 win over West Ham at Upton Park this afternoon. The result keeps the pressure up on Manchester United who take on rivals City tomorrow.
Steven Gerrard put the Reds ahead on 76 seconds when he beat the Hammers' offside trap to latch onto a beautiful through ball from Fernando Torres before rounding Robert Green and coolly slotting the ball into the empty net.
The Liverpool skipper added a second after Luis Boa Morte had brought down Torres in the box. Green saved Gerrard's initial penalty but the England midfielder was on hand to fire home the rebound.
West Ham played well despite going 2-0 down and David di Michele should have made it 2-1 on the stroke of half time following a mistake from Jamie Carragher, but the Italian striker slipped embarrassingly as he attempted to round Pepe Reina.
Ryan Babel added a third Liverpool goal six minutes from time to leave Reds fans dreaming of an upset in tomorrow's Manchester derby.
