Liverpool dumped out of Europe

Kenny Dalglish bemoaned his Liverpool team’s lack of creativity after they went crashing out of the Europa League last night.

The Reds drew 0-0 with Portuguese side Braga at Anfield, unable to overturn the 1-0 deficit they took away from the first leg, and in truth they rarely looked like breaking through a spirited Braga side’s defence. Not even the full debut of £35million striker Andy Carroll could pierce their backline, as he headed two decent chances wide. He could have levelled the tie late on, but Dirk Kuyt blocked his goal bound header, and Liverpool now have to concentrate on making sure they qualify for Europe next season.

‘You need to be really strong creatively if you are going to break down a very organised side or you need a bit of luck,’ said Dalglish. ‘Like every other team in the world we could do with a bit more creativity but we are no different than anyone else.

‘Over the two legs a penalty has separated the two teams. There wasn't much between either side,’ added Dalglish. ‘They were very well organised and we knew the responsibility was on us to break them down and score a goal.

‘If Andy's header had gone in in the first half it could have been a different outcome but we never put anything past the goalkeeper.’
