Liverpool draw 1-1 with Wigan at the JJB
Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal came back to haunt them tonight following their 1-1 draw with Wigan at the JJB. Once again Rafa Benitez's side failed to convert their dominance and possession into goals and were leapfrogged by Manchester United at the top of the table.
Former West Ham midfielder Yossi Benayoun put Liverpool ahead in the 41st-minute latching onto Javier Mascherano's killer pass before firing past Michael Pollitt in the Wigan goal. But the Israel international wasted a golden opportunity to score a second in the 65th-minute.
Despite their dominance, the Reds were unable to press home their advantage and were made to pay in the 81st-minute when Brazilian midfielder Lucas hacked down Jason Koumas in the box. New signing Mido stepped up to slot home for Wigan. Benitez again left £20.3m summer signing Robbie Keane on the bench increasing speculation about his Anfield future.
