Liverpool draw 1-1 with Atletico Madrid
Liverpool needed to use a get out of jail card last night to secure a 1-1 home draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. The Reds were awarded a controversial injury time penalty after captain Steven Gerrard clashed with Mariano Pernia. The Liverpool captain smashed home the resulting spot kick.
The Spanish side had gone ahead through Maxi Rodriquez after some lovely approach play by Antonio López but were up in arms over the penalty award. Even Gerrard admitted that it probably wasn't a penalty.
Rafa Benitez's team squandered a number of good chances through Robbie Keane and Daniel Agger but just about deserved something from the game. Speaking about the penalty award the Liverpool manager said: "There should have been a penalty earlier for handball and if the incident had taken place in the middle of the pitch it would have been a foul so, because it was in the box, it was a penalty."
