Liverpool condemn West Brom to the Championship

Liverpool beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at the Hawthorns this afternoon condemning Tony Mowbray's to the Championship after just one difficult season in the Premier League.

The Baggies have played some good football this season but their Achilles' heel has been their defensive lapses and today was no different. When Shelton Martis dwelt too long on the ball Steven Gerrard was on hand to pounce and clip the ball over Dean Kiely into the back of the net.

Dirk Kuyt made it 2-0 to Liverpool on 62 minutes when he picked up the ball from Gerrard before cutting inside Olsson and firing a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

West Brom didn't go down without a fight however and Marc-Antoine Fortuné was a constant thorn in Liverpool's side all afternoon. Despite the result the game ended on a sour note for the Reds with team-mates Jamie Carragher and Alvaro Arbeloa squaring up to each other ten minutes before time. The two were pulled apart by Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger in an incident reminiscent of David Batty and Graeme LeSaux's hand bags for Blackburn 10 years ago.
