Liverpool beat Marseille in Champions League
Liverpool beat Marseille 1-0 at Anfield last night to secure their place in the knock-out phase of the Champions League. Steven Gerrard again came up with a goal early in the first half, the Liverpool captain ghosted into the Marseille box before expertly guiding Xavi Alonso's pinpoint cross into the top corner.
But Rafa Benítez's side failed to build on their early lead and struggled to contain a skilful and direct Marseille team in a very open match. The French side played some neat one touch football, with Hatem Ben Arfa the stand out player on the night.
Liverpool, in contrast, looked sluggish and tentative and appeared to still be hungover from Saturday's scoreless draw with Fulham. But almost ten years to the day after he made his début, it was Gerrard again who sent the Liverpool fans home happy.
