Liverpool beat Chelsea to go top of Premier League
Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge this afternoon to go top of the Premier League thanks to a first half goal from Xavi Alonso. The win for Rafa Benitez's side brought an end to the Blues' 86-game unbeaten run at home in the league.
Chelsea struggled to break down Liverpool's five-man midfield with fullbacks Ashley Cole and Jose da Silva Bosingwa given no room to operate. Scolari's side produced few chances in a game which Liverpool controlled from start to finish.
Alonso's deflected shot was enough to seal the points but Ryan Babel and the Spanish midfielder both went close to doubling the Reds' lead. With Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the table on 23 points, their fans can start thinking about league titles again.
