Liverpool beat Brighton 2-1 in the Carling Cup
After Liverpool's 4-0 humbling at Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, it was important that the Reds won their next game, to lift their spirits and to banish the ghosts of that hammering.
So it's just as well that they had last night's Carling Cup game at Brighton so soon afterwards, as not only did they win 2-1, their inspirational captain Steven Gerrard came back into the fold after a full six months out. It appears that the England international's groin is behind him, and he showed that even when playing at half-pace he was still a class act. Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt scored Liverpool's goals last night, and Gerrard was keen to emphasise that they were the big news of the evening, not him.
'Tonight was not about me,' said Gerrard. 'It was about progressing in the cup and getting that Tottenham performance out of our system and I think we have now done that. It is down to the manager now. I have been out for six months so it is about getting training sessions under my belt and match time. Hopefully I will be selected for the 18 against Wolves.'
