Liverpool beat Blackburn to stay on top
Liverpool remained one point clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win over Blackburn at Ewood Park yesterday. It wasn't a vintage performance from Rafa Benitez's side, but the Reds had too much quality for a workmanlike Blackburn side.
Xabi Alonso broke the deadlock on 68 minutes after some heroic defending from Paul Ince's team and Yossi Benayoun made it 2-0 to Liverpool after a mazy run into the box and a smart low finish past Robinson. Roque Santa Cruz scored with a close range header five minutes form the end, but Steven Gerrard got a third goal for the Reds to end all hopes of a Blackburn comeback.
The result puts even more pressure on Rovers' manager Paul Ince whose team have now gone 10 Premier League games without a win. While Roy Keane walked out on Sunderland earlier this week, Ince has said that he won't quit as Blackburn boss. It remains to be seen if he'll be given the chance.
