Liverpool and Everton go head to head in Merseyside derby

While Barack Obama and John McCain battled it out last night in Mississippi to earn bragging rights in the US presidential race, the weekend’s most important contest gets under way at Goodison Park at 12.45: the Merseyside derby.

The tie is usually a fiery encounter which has seen 16 players sent off since the start of the Premier League. Both Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville were sent off for Everton during Liverpool’s 2-1 win in the same fixture last year.

Mikel Arteta is set to return for the Toffees, but midfielder Steven Pienaar is still out with an ankle injury. Robbie Keane, Andreas Dossena and Albert Riera will make their derby debuts for Liverpool, but Fabio Aurelio and Phillip Degen will be missing from the defence.
