Liverpool and Arsenal through to Champions League group stage
Liverpool reached the group stages of the Champions League last night beating Standard Liège 1-0 after extra time. Dirk Kuyt got the all important goal in the 118th minute in an another below par performance by Rafael Benitez's team.
But the win came at high price with the news that the Reds' inspirational captain, Steven Gerrard, will have to undergo a groin operation. The England midfielder will be out for at least two weeks and as a result will miss England's opening World Cup qualifiers.
Elsewhere, Arsenal enjoyed an easy passage into the draw for the group stages on Friday running out 4-0 winners over Steve McClaren's FC Twente. New signing Samir Nasri was amongst the goals as the Gunners made up for Sunday's lacklustre performance against Fulham.
Both Liverpool and Arsenal will be hoping for a good draw this evening in Monaco when the make up of the group stages of the Champions League will be decided.
