Liverpool and Arsenal play out 4-4 draw

Liverpool and Arsenal played out a barnstorming 4-4 draw at Anfield last night which looks to have effectively ended the Reds' slim title hopes. The game was characterised by some brilliant finishing coupled with comical defending.

Andrei Arshavin underlined why Arsene Wenger was willing to break the bank to bring the Russia forward to the Emirates during the January transfer window scoring four goals on the night. The former Zenit St Petersburg player opened the scoring after 36 minutes following some great work from Nasri and Fabregas.

But Torres equalised on 49 minutes after Bacary Sagna had made a hash of an attempted clearance. The Reds put their noses in front 10 minutes later after Yossi Benayoun capitalised on another piece of comical defending at the back by the Gunners.

The topsy-turvy game took another twist when Arshavin robbed Arbeloa before scoring past Reina from 20 yards out. The little Russian bagged his hat-trick after some more great work down the left from Nasri.

Fernando Torres made it 3-3 with 28 minutes to go and the game looked set to finish all square, but Arshavin decided that three goals in one game just wasn't enough. Taking his cue from Michael Thomas back in 1989 the diminutive playmaker put Arsenal ahead in injury time.

The Gunners looked set to take all three points before another piece of schoolboy defending at the back allowed Benayoun to score his second and earn his side a point.
