Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0

A revitalized Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0 this afternoon at Anfield. Fernando Torres was the hero on the day bagging two first-half goals cutting Chelsea’s lead at the top of the Premier League to just two points.

For much of this season Liverpool have looked lacklustre and lightweight but today they managed to build on their impressive second-half display against Napoli in the Europa League.

In contrast, Chelsea had been steamrolling their opponents into submission since August. Without Didier Drogba and Michael Essien, however, Carlo Ancelotti’s side appeared uncharacteristically lightweight.

Liverpool’s cause was aided by Dirk Kuyt’s return to the starting line-up. The Dutchman played alongside Fernando Torres up front and was instrumental in setting up the Spaniard's first goal.

Kuyt played Torres in from the right before the Spanish international produced a beautiful dinked finish over Petr Cech. Chelsea failed to respond after going behind and Liverpool’s hard work was rewarded on 44 minutes when Torres scored a second.

Drogba came off the bench at half time and Chelsea were much better following his introduction. Jose Reina produced a brilliant save to deny Flourent Malouda on 66 minutes but Liverpool managed to hold on for a deserved win.
