Liverpool 1 Everton 0

Liverpool beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside derby earlier today at Anfield despite having to play over half of the game with ten men following Sotirios Kyrgiakos' sending off.

Dirk Kuyt grabbed the only goal of the game on 55 minutes with a powerful header from a Steven Gerrard corner. The result sees Liverpool move back into the top four of the Premier League albeit for a few hours at the very least.

The game was punctuated by a number of bad tackles with Everton's Steven Pienaar lucky to escape with just a yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Javier Mascherano. However, not soon after Kyrgiakos was given a straight red card for a two footed tackle on Marouane Fellaini.

However, Everton failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage and it was Liverpool who began to take control of the game. Tim Cahill spurned a great opportunity to give The Toffees the lead when he flashed a free header wide.

Kuyt wasn't as wasteful for Liverpool and took advantage of some hesitancy between Tim Howard and Phil Neville to head the game's only goal.
