Lions draw 13-13 with the Emerging Springboks

The British and Irish Lions drew 13-13 with the Emerging Springboks in Cape Town this evening in the last midweek match of their tour to South Africa.

Willem de Waal scored a brilliant touchline conversion in second-half injury time to earn the Emerging Springboks a share of the spoils. The kick came after Danwel Demas had breached the Lions' defence following a brilliant flowing move from the South Africa A side.

The result was no more than the home side deserved after dominating much of the second half against a lacklustre Lions team. The tourists were 13-0 up at the break thanks to a Keith Earls try which captain and fly-half Ronan O'Gara successfully converted before adding a penalty.

James Hook replaced O'Gara early in the second-half and while the versatile Welsh player showed flashes of brilliance he failed to control the game under the rain and hail of Cape Town.

Tonight's match was the last chance for a number of players to put in a good showing and force their way into the match day 22 for Saturday's crucial second Test against South Africa. Luke Fitzgerald put in a good performance on the wing but it remains to be seen if he has done enough to replace Ugo Monye in the Lions starting XV.
