Let Jose have a go

Arsene Wenger has tried to blame the youth of his players for the hammering his Arsenal side took at the hands of Barcelona, claiming that they’re still ‘developing players’. All of which is very well and good, but ignores the fact that Lionel Messi, the man who scored all four goals in their 4-1 beating, is at 22 years old the same age or younger as all of them. Hopefully Wenger will stop using this excuse every time his team get given a lesson by the big boys.

‘We are at a stage where we're developing players,’ Wenger wibbled. ‘Walcott is 22; Bendtner is 22; Nasri, Diaby and Denílson are 22 or 23. They've shown some great qualities and they'll get stronger every year. We have to add something, for sure, but we have some time to think about that.

‘We were very young tonight and what we did was very positive. We had six or seven players under 23 in the team and we had plenty of opportunities. We showed we lacked maturity in the weight of the final ball.’

Away from the bleating of the heavily beaten, Inter secured their place in the semi-finals with a 1-0 win away at CSKA Moscow, confirming their tie against Barca in the next round, where Jose Mourinho will take on his old foe once again. The chances are they’ll be a little bit better prepared than Arsenal were.
