Lennox grassed me to his mum

Vitali Klitschko has claimed that Lennox Lewis’ mum stopped him from having a rematch with the former heavyweight champ, presumably because she was so terrified of what might happen to him if the big bad Russian got his hands on him again. The 2003 bout between the pair went to Lewis after a deep cut above Klitschko’s left eye stopped the fight in the sixth round, but up until that point he had been winning on points, and as such could have won the match had the referee deemed that the cut had come from a headbutt, rather than a punch.

‘Lennox promised me but his mum decided he wasn't going to fight,’ said the 38-year-old, who could fight another Brit in David Haye should he successfully defend his title against John Ruiz next month. ‘He invited me to London, without managers. He said he wanted to talk just together. I came to the room and his mum is there. We talked for two hours and his mum was looking at me and scanning me.

‘After that I went away and he called me a couple of hours later and said, 'Sorry, but no'. I felt it wasn't his decision, his mum decided. I tried to change his decision, but it's difficult.

‘But I was appreciative to Lennox Lewis that I got the chance to prove my skills against the toughest fighter in the world. But he was lucky, because I was ahead before the doctor stopped the fight with the cut.’
