Leicester beat Cardiff to reach Heineken Cup final

Leicester beat the Cardiff Blues in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to reach the final of the Heineken Cup at Edinburgh on May 23. Jordan Crane was the hero for the English side landing the decisive penalty following a scoreless period of extra-time.

Martin Williams and Tom James both missed spot kicks for Cardiff allowing the Tigers to reach their fifth Heineken Cup final where they will meet Irish province Leinster. Brian O’Driscoll’s side beat their close rivals Munster 25-6 yesterday at Croke Park.

Losing the game in a penalty shoot-out was cruel for the Blues after they clawed their way back from 26-12 down with just a couple of minutes left on the clock. Late tries from Jamie Roberts and Tom James took the game into extra-time when the Tigers looked all set for Edinburgh.

The shoot-out was as dramatic as the match itself with Jonny Murphy and Tom James both missing crucial kicks before the unfortunate Martin Williams was unsuccessful in sudden death. While many will argue that the penalty shoot-out has no place in rugby, it was exciting for the neutrals. Check out the video below.
