Lampard surplus to England's requirements

Frank Lampard’s time as an England regular appears to have come to end. According to report in the Daily Mail this morning, the Chelsea midfielder has fallen out of favour with Fabio Capello.

Instead the Italian is looking to make Jack Wilshere the fulcrum of his team with Scott Parker considered the best central midfield partner for the Arsenal youngster.

Lampard has been called up by Capello for the international friendly against Holland on August 10, however, the Mail reports that despite Steven Gerrard’s injury the Chelsea midfielder will more than likely start on the bench.

Wilshere, 19, has won only five England caps to date but has already shown enough to convince Capello that he represents the future. Although Parker is 30 the Italian believes that he provides more defensive cover than Lampard who has never been known for his tackling.

Ashley Young’s move to Manchester United coupled with his recent international form has also seen him leapfrog ahead of Lampard in the midfield pecking order. Capello is believed to favour employing the former Aston Villa forward behind the front two.

If Young is handed a more central role on a regular basis that would appear to mean that Lampard, known for his forward runs into the box, would be surplus to requirements. However, an exceptional club season or injuries could of course see the Chelsea midfielder force his way back into contention.

Capello, according to the Mail, is also preparing for life after John Terry and Rio Ferdinand with Manchester United’s new signing Phil Jones set make his international debut against Holland. The 19-year-old was England’s best player at the European U-21 Championship last month and the Italian sees the former Blackburn player as forming a long-term centre-back pairing with either Michael Dawson or Phil Jagielka in the not too distant future.
