Lampard ruled out of England qualifier

Chelsea have confirmed that Frank Lampard will miss the Champions League game with Marseille on Tuesday as well as England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.

The 32-year-old midfielder has been out of action for the last month after undergoing a hernia operation and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti made it clear today that Lampard won’t be fit until after the October international break.

‘We need to have more time than we expected for his rest,’ Ancelotti said. ‘He will be ready for the next game after the international break. He has not played for us so he will not be able to play for the national team.’

Lampard was missed in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City with the midfield trio of Michael Essien, Ramires and John Obi Mikel providing little goal threat, however, he should be back for the Premier League match against Aston Villa on October 16.

The midfielder’s absence from international duty may be something of a blessing in disguise for Fabio Capello. England looked more balanced in the qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland early this month with Lampard’s absence allowing Steven Gerrard to play in central midfield.
