Lampard and Gerrard take blame for Euro 2008 failure
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has heaped the blame for England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008 on the inability of himself and Steven Gerrard to recreate their club form at international level.
Speaking candidly to reporters, Lampard admitted that he has underperformed over the last two years in an England shirt, but hoped that the 4-1 win over Croatia in Zagreb was a turning point: "I'm big enough to say that, for the last couple of years, I haven't done as well as I should have for England. After Croatia, this is a start for me to kick on again and show the sort of form I feel I can."
Fabio Capello is set to pair Lampard and Gerrard together on Saturday against Kazakhstan in yet another attempt to try and play the two in the same side. Many commentators believe that the pair are too similar to play in the same side, meaning one of them has to sacrifice his attacking instincts. Tonight will be another chance to see if Capello can solve that age old problem.
