Kuyt rescues Liverpool against Trabzonspor

Liverpool came from one goal down to beat Trabzonspor 2-1 in what looked like it could be an embarrassing Europa League exit for the Premier League club.

The Turkish side went ahead after four minutes when Teofilo Gutierrez capitalized on some sloppy play from Dirk Kuyt to score from close range and level the tie on aggregate.

The Reds, missing Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, struggled to get into the game in the first half but created a number of scoring chances early after the break.

David Ngog spurned two clear-cut opportunities to score. First the French striker headed a Joe Cole cross wide from point-blank range and minutes later fired a shot from the edge of the box off target.

However, Liverpool grew in confidence and looked the more likely to score as Trabzonspor dropped deeper and deeper into defence.

Ngog’s hard work eventually paid off eight minutes from time when his pressure on Giray Kacar saw the defender put the ball into his own net.

Kuyt made up for his early error when he followed up a Joe Cole shot that Kivrak could only parry to score from close range.
