With so much rugby left to play – and upsets coming thick and fast (Argentina beating France and Ireland, Fiji beating Wales, and England scoring a half-decent try from deep) – the bookies are offering punters no reason whatever to back the undoubtedly impressive All Blacks at 5/4 on. The bookies – sages that they are – know what the rest of us sense… No one is equipped to stop the irresistible Kiwis from scooping the Webb Ellis trophy again on 20 October.
Especially not the English, according to the turf accountants. Most have the (slowly) improving John Bulls at around 66/1, with The Wallabies at 18/1, and the South African Springboks second favourite (in what most would have as a one-horse race) at 11/4.
So what to bet on?
How about Sharon Osborne to be the winning manager of X Factor, currently at 3/1? Or maybe a quid or two on the Dallas Cowboys – the NFL’s glamour team – at 20/1 to win the Superbowl on 1 February, 2008? Or maybe a tenner on Hawthorn at 3/1 to win the Aussie Rules Grand Final on 25 October?
So many bets, so little time...
