Kinnear: Given will not be leaving Newcastle

Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has insisted that the club's No.1 Shay Given will not be leaving St James' Park. The claim comes just days after Given's lawyer Michael Kennedy revealed his client's unhappiness at the North East club.

Speaking about the rumours Kinnear told reporters: "I'm not sure of the facts that he [Kennedy] has said that or how it's been interpreted, but what I will say is Shay is contracted until 2011." The Newcastle boss continued, "we are not interested at all. I want to be clear that - that is probably the last time I will be talking about it. He is an integral part of the team, he is the best goalkeeper by miles in the league, so why should we jeopardise our chances in the position we are in? It wouldn't make sense."

Given has been at Newcastle since 1997, but has no winners medals to show for his loyalty. Despite recently turning thirty-two, the Ireland keeper is regarded as one of the best in the Premier League and unsurprisingly a number of other top flight clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City, are believed to want to sign the Newcastle net minder.
