Keep a lid on it, Wayne

The referee who took charge of England’s final warm up match before the World Cup has warned that Wayne Rooney must learn to control his temper or risk being sent off during the tournament.

Rooney was booked by Jeff Selogilwe during England’s 3-0 win over Platinum All Stars and the official claims that Rooney let rip with insults and ‘vulgar language. It’s well know that Rooney has a fiery temper, but Selogilwe warns that we could end up with a repeat of the Manchester United striker’s 2006 sending off, where he stamped on Ricardo Carvalho in a fit of rage.

‘He must learn to control his temper,’ he said to the BBC. ‘He could get sent off in the World Cup. He is a good player when you see him on the TV but when you see him on the pitch, he just keeps on insulting the referees.

‘To me, it looks like Rooney insults people and fouls other players. If he insults a referee like me then he will use that vulgar language to other referees as well. I was very disappointed in Rooney because he is my favourite player.’

For his part Rooney apologised after the match and gave him his shirt. Let's just hope he doesn't try that during a match - it's a bookable offence.
