Kate for England cricket job?

English cricket could soon be by Royal Appointment. The England Cricket Board want the Duchess of Cambridge to be the honorary figurehead for the sport. The ECB confirmed that they had approached the Duchess to become the first official patron of English cricket.

An ECB insider told The Daily Mirror, "There isn’t a patron at the moment and it is a position the ECB is keen to create. The Duchess of Cambridge would make the ideal patron for the game because she is young, vibrant and a role model to millions."

It would create an intriguing dual role for the Cambridges. Prince William is presently president of the Football Association, and if Kate accepts the ECB role it will establish a royal connection with England’s summer sport. Prince Harry and Princess Anne are both involved with rugby, while Prince Charles tends to steer clear of anything sporting.

It is not known whether the Duchess of Cambridge has any interest in cricket. Her sister Pippa Middleton is certainly familiar with the sport, having recently ended a relationship with the former England all-rounder Alex Loudon. Whether this will make Kate more or less likely to accept the ECB’s offer is subject to speculation.

England’s cricketers at least seemed to be stirred into action by the news, perhaps in a desire to be worthy of royal patronage. In the third Test in Dubai, they made a storming start, bowling Pakistan out before tea for just 99. The series has already been lost, but they are in a decent position to restore some pride.
