John Terry: England captain?

England manager Fabio Capello has hinted that he might hand the England captaincy back to John Terry, after expressing displeasure at the way the armband was handed around like candy during the team’s 2-1 win against Denmark last month.

Capello saw captaincy passed from Frank Lampard to Ashley Cole, then from Cole to Gareth Barry, all the while with former skipper Terry on the pitch. The England boss has also said that a year ‘a good period to understand a mistake’ (Terry lost the role last February after his affair with Vanessa Perroncel was revealed), and that Rio Ferdinand’s recurring back problem might mean he reverts back to the Chelsea captain.

‘I was upset about this, really upset, when I saw the players handing it around,’ Capello said. ‘People were saying, 'Who's the captain?' I had decided on three, the captain, vice captain and second vice captain. But there was confusion. I think for John Terry it was a bad moment.

‘First of all I want to know what happened with Rio's back and when he will be fit because he is a really important player for us. After that I will explain to him what really happened and what I am going to do, if I will decide on a new captain or about John Terry or something else. I will explain what happened in Denmark and what I think. I would understand if he is not happy. But I am the manager. I have to take decisions.’
