Jenas accuses Howard Webb of "crumbling under pressure"
Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has accused referee Howard Webb of "crumbling under pressure" following his decision to award a penalty award to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon during their 5-2 win over Spurs.
United were 2-0 down early in the second half when Webb judged that Heurelho Gomes took down Michael Carrick in the box despite the fact that the Brazilian clearly got the ball. Ronaldo scored the resulting penalty to get his team back into the game.
"I think it was a case of a referee crumbling under the pressure at Old Trafford really," Jenas said. "The atmosphere, the occasion, the importance of the match, a lot of factors take their toll when making decisions."
The Spurs midfielder continued: "One thing which struck me about it was that he didn't even think. It was like he'd already made his mind up when he came out for the second half that he was going to give something. I think he will definitely admit he got that one wrong. It was a very important moment in the season."
