With the bleak midwinter well and truly upon us, many of us will turn to sport to warm us up in this cold and dreary season. So here are some highlights to look forward to.
In athletics, there’s the BUPA Great Winter Run, Edinburgh (January 12) and the Norwich Union International Match at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow (January 26).
For badminton fans, there’s the Head Wimbledon National Elite Open, in London (January 26-27). There’s a full basketball programme in the BBL Championship, and a comprehensive horse racing calendar too.
Golf offers several big European tour dates, notably the Jo’burg open (January 10-13) and the Dubai Desert Classic (from Jan 31; watch out for those sand-traps!).
For lovers of the ice, there’s a host of top events including the ISU European Speed Skating Championships in, Kolomna, Russia (January 12-13) and the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Zagreb, Croatia (January 21-27).
You can tune in to the first stages of the Dakar Rally 2008 (starting with Lisbon to Portimao, January 5), or watch Andy Murray in action in the Australian Open (January 14-27).
And from January 15, the big one: the Pro Tour Slovenian Open in Velenje, Slovenia. What’s that? Table tennis, of course.
