Italy beat France to secure quarter-final place
Italy beat France 2-0 in Group C to secure a quarter-final spot with Spain at Euro 2008 on Sunday. Andrea Pirlo and Daniele De Rossi got the goals for the world champions.
France lost Franck Ribéry early on to injury after he fell awkwardly in a tackle with Zambrotta. Minutes later the French were down to ten men. Barcelona's Eric Adibal hacked down Luca Toni from behind in the box and was shown a red card. Pirlo smashed home the resulting spot-kick.
Man of the match Daniele De Rossi scored Italy's second with a long range free-kick which was deflected in off Thierry Henry. Raymond Domenech's side had few answers, with the front pairing of Benzema and Henry resorting to long range efforts on goal. The only bad news on the night for Italy was Pirlo's booking which will see him suspended for the quarter-final against Spain.
Having already qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, Holland made nine changes for last night's game but were still too strong for Romania winning 2-0. Huntelaar and van Persie got the goals against a toothless looking Romania side.
