It was all down to me

It another very good night for British football in the Champions League last night, with all three of the teams from this sceptred isle victorious, including possibly the most British of the lot – Rangers.

The Glasgow club beat Turkish side Bursaspor 1-0 at Ibrox and Manchester United snatched a massive 1-0 win away at Valencia, but the night belonged to Tottenham Hotspur, who grabbed their first ever Champions league win in a barnstorming 4-1 win over Dutch champs FC Twente. Unusually for him, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp decided to take all the credit. How nice.

‘We picked an open team, we went for it,’ said Redknapp. ‘They had an extra man in midfield and we knew there'd be spells where they'd hit us on the counterattack but that's how we decided to play. You've got to look at the opposition and see where their strengths are and where you can hurt them.

‘We decided to press them high up the park with our two centre-forwards to stop them playing out from the back and it worked well. That's what it's about: picking the right team. I picked the right team and we won 4-1. Not a problem.’
