Ireland earn late draw with Australia

Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll scored a dramatic late try which Ronan O'Gara converted to give his team a 20-20 draw with Australia at Croke Park.

The visitors had taken an early lead when Drew Mitchell took advantage of misplaced pass from O'Gara to race in under the posts unopposed. Matt Giteau made no mistake with the conversion.

Australia looked months ahead of their opponents who were playing their first match of the season with Aussie captain former Leinster flanker Rocky Elsom leading from the front. Ireland were second at the breakdown and struggled to create any inroads with slow ball.

Giteau missed an easy chance with the boot to give Australia a ten point lead and Ireland hit back almost straight away with a try from winger Tommy Bowe. However, Giteau atoned for his earlier error with a scything break before Quade Cooper offloaded to Elsom who muscled his way over the line.

Bowe went close late on to scoring Ireland's second try of the game but was held up short. However, it wasn't long before the home side crossed the line again when Tomas O'Leary picked out O'Driscoll from the resulting five-metre scrum and the veteran centre ran over unopposed. O'Gara made no mistake with the conversion to scupper Australia's grand slam chances.
