The Bernabeau in Madrid wasn’t the only scene of a hilarious hammering in the Champions League last night: Milan’s San Siro stadium also saw a raft of goals, calamitous defending, a sending off and a club’s Champions League hopes dashed long before the end of the first leg, only it was Internazionale, not Schalke 04, who will almost certainly be dumped out of the tournament.

Inter were beaten 5-2 in a bizarre night’s football in Milan: the Italians started very quickly, with Stankovich scoring one of the goals of the century to give Inter the lead; volleying a clearance right back over the keeper’s head from the halfway line. However after that Schalke’s superior movement put Inter’s defence on the back foot, and after Christian Chivu was sent off the Germans turned the screw, with Jefferson Farfan among the stand-out performers.

This defeat comes hot on the heels of the weekend’s 3-0 hammering in the Milan derby, which has also more or less ended their dreams of retaining their Serie A title. The pressure is certainly on manager Leonardo to turn things around.

‘It’s not very realistic to talk of a comeback,’ he admitted in the Gazzetta Dello Sport. ‘But with football you never know. Anything can happen. ‘Tonight we started the match really well, but this is a really big defeat and to try and justify it seems out of place. It was difficult to believe that it would finish like that after how we started. In the second half we missed a chance to score and straight afterwards they scored their third: They had 6-7 chances and scored five, and there’s not much else to say.’
