International rugby union World Cup

The international rugby union world cup is the pinnacle of the rugby calendar, and is a prestigious event for all nations to be involved in. It comes around every four years and is a chance for players to shine on the largest stage, in front of the whole world.

Teams compete to lift the Webb Ellis Cup, and the last nation to do so were South Africa in 2007. They beat England (the previous holders) in the final, and are now trying to defend their title.

This year the international rugby union world cup is being held in New Zealand, and many tip them to win the cup, which they have not done since the first world cup in 1987.

Other favourites to win this year are England, who won the title in 2003, Australia who have won the title twice previously in 1991 and 1999, and South Africa who have been the previous victors in 1995 and 2007. France are the only other nation that bookmakers see as having a realistic chance of lifting the cup.

If you are not a big rugby fan at the moment this is an ideal chance for you to view the sport at its most impressive, with all of the best players in the world putting on a great show of pace, power, and skill.

Some players to keep an eye out for this year will include Quade Cooper and Kutley Beale of Australia, Manu Tuilagi of England, and Heinrich Brussow of South Africa. They are tipped to set the tournament alight and show why the game is enjoying such popularity at the moment.
