Hook and Ford called up to Lions squad

Scotland hooker Ross Ford and Wales out-half James Hook became the latest players called up to the British and Irish Lions squad to take on South Africa in place of the injured duo Jerry Flannery and Leigh Halfpenny.

Munster hooker Flannery enjoyed a brilliant season with Ireland winning the Grand Slam before reaching the Heineken Cup semi-final with his club side. But the 30-year-old became the third Munster player to be ruled out of the tour after tearing ligaments in his elbow.

The selection of Ford doubles the Scottish representation on the tour with just Nathan Hines and Euan Murray being selected in the original touring party. Despite enjoying a poor season at club and international level, Hook can cover a number of positions in the back-line with Halfpenny set to meet up with the squad two weeks into the tour.
