Holland light up Euro 2008 with stunning win over Italy
Holland lit up Euro 2008 last night with a stunning 3-0 win over World Cup holders Italy at the Stade de Suisse. The game was a well needed antidote to Group C's other game, a soporific 0-0 draw played out by a lacklustre France and a hardworking Romania.
Marco van Basten's team blew the Italians away in the first half with Ruud van Nistelrooy scoring a controversial goal after 26 minutes before Wesley Sneijder finished off a scintillating counter attack launched by the outstanding Giovanni van Bronckhorst on 31 minutes.
Italy looked well off the pace of the game and the absence of the injured Fabio Cannavaro at the heart of the Azzuri's defence was keenly felt. The centre back pairing of Materazzi and Barzagli enjoyed a torrid time from Holland's attack before the Inter Milan player was hauled off by Roberto Donadoni.
Del Piero, Grosso and Cassano came on in the second half for Italy as they tried to rescue something from the game but Holland countered and van Bronckhorst headed in their third goal after Luca Toni had wasted a guilt edged chance in front of goal.Netherlands v Italy
