Holland 2 Slovakia 1

Holland booked a place in the World Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable 2-1 win over Slovakia at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban earlier this afternoon.

Arjen Robben marked his first appearance in this World Cup with a trademark goal to put the Netherlands ahead on 18 minutes.

The Bayern Munich winger picked up a long diagonal pass from Wesley Sneijder on the right wing before bamboozling the Slovakian defence and placing a left foot shot past Jan Mucha.

Slovakia were unable to rediscover the crisp passing and tempo which saw them knock defending champions Italy out in the group stages in a what was a lacklustre match overall.

Sneijder added Holland’s second goal four minutes from the end of normal time when he got on the end of a Dirk Kuyt centre after Mucha gambled and failed to gather a Giovanni van Bronckhorst free-kick.

Robert Vittek got a late injury time consolation for Slovakia from the penalty spot after Holland keeper Maarten Stekelenburg had felled Martin Jakubo, but it was too little too late.
