Great Briton

Britain gained its second gold at the World Championships in Berlin last night, when Phillips Idowu won the triple jump event. The Briton jumped a personal best of 17.73 in the third round that was a full 18cm ahead of deadly rival Nelson Evora that comfortably sealed his win.

The win continues his run of winning a major gold medal every year since 2006 and at least partially banished the ghost of his silver medal at last year’s Olympics.

‘I knew I had a big jump in me,’ he said afterwards. ‘I'm just grateful that it came out at the right time. I don't know where I was on the board, I just knew my run-up was going well so I had to commit and just keep going. It was enough to win. To be honest I didn't think 17.70 was going to be enough, and I felt I had more in reserve. It's a good day, man, I got a world outdoor title to go with my (2007) world indoor one.

‘I still have a dream of being Olympic champion. It's a long way away, I've got another couple of years and I've still got to defend this title. I've got to defend my world indoor title next year.’
